The North Sea Region is facing severe consequences of climate change, such as sea level increase, more severe storm surges and heat stress on sandy coasts. These consequences have a detrimental impact on coastal zones. Therefore, coastal management in the North Sea region needs to adapt to these changes in order to protect the coast and deliver a sustainable future.
In response to this challenge, the INTERREG North Sea Programme project MAinstreaming NAture BAsed Solutions through COASTal systems (MANABAS COAST) will develop an accessible and evidence-based framework for widescale implementation of so-called Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in coastal areas. These NbS tackle climate impacts and simultaneously provide benefits for human well-being and biodiversity. Elaborating on the recent outcomes of the INTERREG NSR Building with Nature project, MANABAS COAST aims to set the stage for implementation of NbS in the North Sea region. The project is co-funded by the European Union and is a cooperation of several partners that were also involved in the Building with Nature project. MANABAS COAST will run from 2022 to 2027.
