The InnoWaTr project is leading the charge towards sustainable urban logistics in HafenCity in Hamburg. Set to debut next year, the initiative will pilot an electric inland waterway shuttle for retail transportation.

In the InnoWaTr project, Logistics Initiative Hamburg is leading the charge towards sustainable urban logistics in HafenCity Hamburg, Germany. Set to debut next year, the initiative will pilot an electric inland waterway shuttle for retail transportation.

In February 2024, Logistics Initiative Hamburg and partners embarked on an exploratory trip to map the transport route from Mittelkanal to HafenCity together with some implementation partners and our partner project DECARBOMILE.  The aim: identifying technical and operational challenges early on to ensure the upcoming urban transport ship meets project requirements.

At the heart of this initiative lies the logistics expertise of TOP Mehrwert-Logistik, a key member company embedded within the project. Partners from Flanders, Belgium, are responsible for both the construction and operation of the vessel, underscoring the collaborative nature of this endeavor.

The logistics chain envisioned is both innovative and environmentally friendly. With a warehouse conveniently located adjacent to the Mittelkanal, the TOP Mehrwert-Logistik site will serve as a hub for consolidating specific retail goods destined for HafenCity's bustling commercial district. These goods will then be transported via the planned 6-kilometer route, navigating through the canal system of the Bille and into the Norderelbe via a lock mechanism.

The end goal is to reduce truck transports in the city center, promoting sustainability and enhancing urban livability. Stay tuned for updates as InnoWaTr transforms retail logistics in HafenCity.
