Leuven (BE)

Within the pilot focused on engaging with different target groups, Leuven will be testing different approaches to lower the thresholds for disadvantaged groups and to encourage them to use shared mobility hubs to combat transport poverty. For this purpose, a shared mobility test hub the size of two parking spaces will be designed and purchased or hired, with some basic functions of mobility (for a limited supply of different types of shared bikes) and equipped with a simple innovative system of sustainable energy production. This test hub will be extended in a modular way with possibly other functions such as an information pillar, benches, bicycle repair toolkit, lockers, and some greenery. This mobile test hub will be rotated along in about six locations, where it will be tested interactively for about 2 months each. The city will organise consultations with the target group. Through these test set-ups in the immediate vicinity of specific target groups, the city wants to gain insight into the expectations, needs and barriers of these groups.

Within the pilot focused on mixed user groups of shared mobility hubs, The city plans to test different use cases with emphasis on complementary user profiles to increase the total use of shared transport modes and thus make the business case for providers more interesting. We are planning to test the following combinations:

  • Shared e-cars: combination of service trips by companies (city services, companies, knowledge centres, etc.) and personal trips by citizens
  • Shared e-cargobikes: combination of service trips by companies (traders, knowledge centres, etc.,) and personal trips by citizens.
  • Shared e-bikes: companies make a fleet of shared e-bikes available to the public during fixed time slots (e.g., after office hours and during weekends).

By looking for win-win solutions in close consultation with companies, the offer of shared mobility will increase for the different transport modes, which will contribute to a higher use and number of users of shared mobility as a whole.
