Text and Image Section

In Bergen (Norway) we work in several locations to foster active mobility. One intervention is focusing on mobility hubs, aiming to transform the mobility landscape in three key areas: Fyllingsdalen, Kronstad and Mindebyen. Upon the construction of the longest purpose-built cycling and walking tunnel, Bergen seeks ways to activate these three areas that the tunnel connects. The other intervention is focusing on walkability in Nordnes, in the city center of Bergen. Through interventions and evaluation we aim to learn more about walkability, in order to recommend solutions to the rest of the city.

Objectives

  • Execute walking and cycling strategies of the city and region
  • Reimagine multimodal planning in the three key areas to foster active mobility
  • Promote the use of the recently opened active mobility tunnel corridor
  • Improve accessibility for pedestrians through the year, by improving winter maintenance
  • Learn how low tech redesign can make streets more walkable

Physical Intervention

  • Rethink the design of three mobility hubs (Fyllingsdalen, Kronstad & Mindebyen) to integrate active mobility. This includes a shared bike system and safe parking facilities, along with the opening of the active mobility tunnel.
  • Temporary re-design of streets to improve walkability, including new methods for organizing and performing winter maintenance.

Soft Intervention

  • Implement campaigns and other behaviour measures. Maintain the tunnel as an attractive transport infrastructure.
  • Establish a dialogue with pedestrians through focus groups, walks, field interviews, and the “City Detectives” initiative (involving school classes) to understand and improve their experience.
