Space for Active Mobility in Spoordok, Leeuwarden

Main content

Leeuwarden, (The Netherlands), aims to transform the Spoordok area into a cycling and pedestrian-friendly space. The city takes an integrated land-use approach, focusing on new mobility designs along housing and office space projects to ensure a vibrant environment that promotes active mobility.

Objectives

  • Achieve an urban redesign that encourages active mobility while considering the interests of multiple stakeholders
  • Stimulate diverse and vulnerable temporary residents in using active modes of mobility
  • Ensure a good pedestrian connection between the pilot area and the mobility hub (train station)

Physical Intervention

  • Redesign the Snekertrekweg and Marshall boulevard in Spoordok from a car-heavy road to a pedestrian and bicycle-friendly boulevard.

Soft Intervention

  • To encourage active mobility in groups less familiar with it, such as refugees and foreign students, the initiative will conduct awareness campaigns and citizen engagement programs.
