Bremen - Industrial Park Riedemann-Reiher-Strasse (RR)

This heavily sealed industrial estate in the north of Bremen's Gröpelingen district will be transformed into a greener, more climate-resilient business district.

Main content

Pilot site overview

The pilot site is located on an industrial estate in the north of Bremen’s Gröpelingen district. The area is enclosed by a motorway and rail lines, and is heavily paved with almost no green space.

Pre-implementation challenges in pilot site

  • High pollution levels
  • Almost no greenery or space for people to enjoy the outdoors
  • High degree of urban sealing makes it vulnerable to heat stress and flooding
  • Conflicting interests among company owners, who prioritize economic goals over ecological investments, further limiting biodiversity enhancements
  • High demand for parking spaces

Interventions planned

  • Support businesses in biodiversity protection by identifying interested property owners, providing information on funding opportunities and supporting the implementation of measures like unsealing, wildflower planting, green roofs and facade greening.
  • Create new small public green spaces by converting unused areas into biodiverse green spaces, enlarging and connecting tree pits, and planting more roadside trees.
  • Introduce ecological pilot projects such as a wildflower meadow on municipal land in cooperation with a nearby school.

Expected impact

The interventions will help transform a heavily sealed industrial area into a greener, more climate-resilient business district. Expanding urban green infrastructure will strengthen local biodiversity and improve environmental quality. Meanwhile, close cooperation with business owners will raise awareness of climate adaptation needs and encourage private greening efforts, helping to promote shared responsibility for a healthier urban environment.
