Pilot site overview
The site covers 640 m² and was previously occupied by a building that has now been demolished. The former building site is being transformed into a shared “edible garden” combining individual allotments, a communal garden, and nature-friendly spaces that local residents can enjoy together.
Pre-implementation challenges in pilot site
- Very limited green space due to the highly urbanised surroundings
- Low levels of plant and animal life
- The site is enclosed by large buildings on three sides, making it feel isolated
- The site is mostly covered by shade for much of the year, creating cool conditions that are not ideal for growing vegetables
Interventions planned
- Creating 10 individual allotment plots, a shared garden area, a small orchard, and a wetland zone
- Installing garden sheds and rainwater collection systems to support sustainable water use
- Adding shelters and nesting spaces for birds, bats, small mammals, and garden dormice
- Actively involving residents in designing, planting, and caring for the garden, while building local gardening skills
Expected impact
- Increasing the amount of green space in Lille and encouraging residents to use and care for these spaces
- Strengthening Lille’s wider ecological network by creating new diverse habitats in a dense urban area
- Supporting wildlife through varied natural environments and light-touch facilities such as nesting boxes
- Encouraging a stronger connection to nature in the city and raising awareness of urban gardening and food production
