Pilot site overview
The Parc des Expositions pilot site covers around 6 hectares and includes 261 housing units. The site is one of Lille’s lowest-income neighbourhoods where residents have limited access to quality green space and are faced with high pollution and noise levels, alongside heat stress in summer. The area is now up for renovation, and the City of Lille plans to use this opportunity to develop the green space located in the centre.
Pre-implementation challenges in pilot site
- Limited quality green spaces for local residents to enjoy
- Location in one of Lille’s lowest-income neighbourhoods
- Major roads nearby expose inhabitants to high pollution and noise levels
- High levels of urban density, contributing to heat stress
Interventions planned
- Introducing new blue and green infrastructure, including hedge planting and the creation of a new pond
- Involving residents in the co-design of new and existing green spaces through workshops, to ensure the spaces meet local needs and to raise awareness of the benefits of urban nature
- Improving walking and cycling infrastructure to support safer, more sustainable mobility options
Expected impact
- Enhancing the quality and usability of existing green spaces
- Creating better connections for pedestrians and cyclists, both within the site and between nearby gardens and public spaces
- Improving the overall layout of land use, public areas, and parking, allowing nature to play a more visible and valued role
- Highlighting the importance of biodiversity in urban planning by:
- Better integrating the site into Lille’s wider ecological and landscape network
- Introducing biodiversity-friendly features as part of the redevelopment
