Växjö - Telestadshöjden Wetland

Wetland restoration project will help manage stormwater to protect nearby developments from flooding as well as providing citizens with better access to nearby nature.

Main content

Pilot site overview

A 13-hectare forest area in the outskirt of Växjö that is not currently used will be turned into a wetland area. This will first and foremost help manage stormwater to protect nearby developments from flooding as well as providing residents, the nearby preschool and local associations with better access to nature.

Pre-implementation challenges in pilot site

  • Poor stormwater management with downstream flooding problems
  • The forest mostly consists of spruces and birch, with limited biodiversity (although it's important to note that some parts of the forest do have greater levels of biodiversity)
  • The area is not currently very accessible to the public. This issue is becoming increasingly relevant as more people are moving into the area and need nearby green spaces for walking and spending time outdoors

Interventions planned

  • Restore former wetland habitat to help regulate stormwater and improve habitats for local plant and animal life, while preserving the biodiversity status of the existing forest
  • Build new outdoor facilities including:
    • Paths and walkways so citizens and visitors can easily visit and enjoy the area
    • Boardwalks and bridges near the new wetland zones so visitors can explore underwater life (e.g tadpoles)
    • Barbeque area where citizens can meet up and socialise

Expected impact

The interventions aim to improve habitats for wildlife, reduce flooding risks and offer new places for residents to walk, play, relax and engage in outdoor education activities. This vision is in line with plans to develop the area bit by bit, as Växjö city continues to expand.
