The recent LBEG conference on groundwater flow models brought together 175 experts to discuss the management of water resources. The conference offered the ideal opportunity to present our GE2 pilot.

The LBEG Conference

The conference organized by the Lower Saxony State Authority for Mining, Energy and Geology (LBEG) served as a platform for experts to exchange knowledge and insights into groundwater flow models. It attracted a diverse range of participants, including researchers, policymakers and consultants. The event aimed to address the challenges associated with groundwater management and to explore innovative approaches to ensure the sustainable use of this vital resource.

Geest Adaptation in the Blue Transition Project

The GE2 pilot seeks to develop adaptation strategies for the Geest region, with a primary focus on groundwater resources. The areas face challenges such as limited freshwater availability, climate change impacts, and the potential for saltwater intrusion. By studying groundwater flow models and collaborating with local stakeholders, the pilot aims to develop sustainable solutions that ensure the long-term viability of these regions.

During the LBEG conference, the GE2 pilot was presented as a significant initiative within the Blue Transition project. The pilot's objectives include assessing the current state of groundwater resources, understanding the impacts of climate change, and formulating adaptation strategies to mitigate risks. It emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, engaging experts from various fields such as hydrogeology, ecology, and socio-economics to achieve comprehensive and effective solutions.

As the Blue Transition project progresses, the findings and recommendations from the GE2 pilot are expected to contribute to the development of sustainable water resource management practices in the North Sea region. By prioritizing the conservation and efficient use of groundwater resources, the pilot represents a vital step towards a more resilient and environmentally friendly future.
