The climate is changing. Winters are getting wetter; summers are getting drier. We need to manage our water differently. It is becoming increasingly important to retain water for dry times. Especially upstream. This is also the policy of the water board Noorderzijlvest.

In this pilot, we will practice retaining water in the small open waterways upstream. We involve landowners in this. We look at the effects of water retention on groundwater and soil moisture. For this, we commission a model study. We will also practice with hands-on measures.

Within the pilot area, we will set up a testing ground around the village of Zeijen to work with landowners on small scale water-retention trials. Examples include the installation of weirs, reverse drainage and soil treatment.
