On April 8th CTB partners met online to discuss the framework within which the consortium works and to clarify our definition of ‘circular’ in the context of the Circular Trust Building project. Following a presentation by Peter Omlo, Researcher of Circularity and one of our knowledge partners from the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, the group discussed the subject from different perspectives – a necessary exercise in preparation for more in-depth work planned for the upcoming biannual meeting in Sweden.

EU Circular criteria

With the project application in hand and considering the EU taxonomy criteria of circularity of construction and demolition waste, we have a point of departure. [https://ec.europa.eu/sustainable-finance-taxonomy/activities/activity/351/view].

Relevant points from this taxonomy include:

  • All generated construction and demolition waste is treated in accordance with EU waste legislation EU Construction and Demolition Waste Management Protocol
  • Setting sorting systems and pre-demolition audits
  • At least 50% of the original building is retained in case of renovation
  • The use of primary raw material in new construction and renovation is minimized by using secondary raw materials, described per category.
  • Characteristics of the building, including the materials and components used, are digitally logged for future maintenance, recovery, and reuse. For example, using EN ISO22057:2022 to provide Environmental Product Declarations
  • followed by the note that we will be continuing the discussion during the partner meeting in Sweden, that will also have a masterclass on the transition theory and back casting on the agenda, will be OK for this moment I would say.
