Last Friday, our partners in Hamburg – Hamburg University of Applied Sciences and Bezirksamt Altona – organised the workshop “DARKER SKY – Rethinking darkness in the city” at the main library of Bücherhallen Hamburg

The workshop welcomed people of all ages. Participants explored several interactive stations, where they
· Discussed what focus should be placed on reducing light pollution
·  Tried out the effects of different types of lighting in VR settings
·  Explored the connections between lighting technology and light perception
·  Watched films about the effects of light pollution
·  Got creative and ‘gave nature a voice’ in the form of poems and drawings
·  Experienced how bright the sky is in Hamburg and why we can see so few stars

For us, this workshop showed again: reducing light pollution is not only a technical issue. It is also about awareness, perception, and shared responsibility.
Thank you to our Hamburg partners for organising this inspiring event and for helping to rethink urban darkness together.

The event was part of the “Reingeforscht” series, a cooperation between HAW Hamburg and the Hamburg libraries. Researchers share their current work with the public in an open and accessible way.
