On 26 January 2026, we held a local workshop in Holwert, one of our demonstrator sites. The evening took place at the project office of Holwerd aan Zee and brought together residents, local organisations, experts and project partners.
The workshop focused on the question: how can we use light more wisely at night, with more space for nature, darkness and quality of life? Participants were informed about the goals of DARKER SKY and the pilot activities in Holwert, including the new public lighting in the village.
Several speakers shared practical and scientific perspectives. Our project partner Arjen Strijkstra from Van Hall Larenstein explained how artificial light affects biodiversity, with examples from the local environment. Piet Zijlstra from our demonstrator site in Lauwersoog shared insights about the light modifications applied in Lauwersoog.
Outside, a smart lamppost was demonstrated, showing how lighting can be adjusted in intensity and timing. There was also a discussion about tourism and how darker nights can become part of the local identity.
Residents and entrepreneurs were invited to take part in a small competition for ideas to improve lighting around homes and businesses. Selected ideas can receive financial support for implementation. The evening ended with informal conversations, giving space for questions, exchange and future cooperation.
