Vesthimmerlands Kommune launches sharing station pilots across two central library locations, making it easier for residents to access what they need, without needing to buy.

The two self-service sharing stations—called “Fællesskabet”—were installed at Aars Library and Aalestrup Library, giving citizens access to practical tools, household items, and leisure equipment they only need occasionally.

From experience kits to carpet cleaners, sewing machines and hammer drills, the stations made rarely used items available free of charge—helping reduce waste and support a more circular everyday life.

“It strengthens the local community to share resources and access tools that you do not necessarily have at home. In this way, we promote social sustainability and inclusive communities, and contribute to Vesthimmerlands’ climate goals through reduced consumption.”

Frederikke Voegeding, Project Lead, Vesthimmerlands Kommune

Two multipurpose sharing stations across two libraries

The Vesthimmerlands pilot introduces two multipurpose sharing stations, each offering 18 items and operating free of charge. Residents can now borrow tools, kitchen equipment, hobby materials, leisure items, and themed “experience kits” for everyday tasks or creative activities.

Both stations are placed in well-established public libraries that already function as trusted community hubs. These locations were chosen because:

  • Libraries already operate as safe, accessible, and highly frequented public spaces. Borrowing and returning items were part of their core activity, making the sharing concept a natural extension.
  • Existing loan infrastructure was strong across both locations. Staff are used to registrations, loans, and user guidance, helping the service integrate smoothly into existing workflows.
  • Both libraries are centrally located, easy to reach by foot, bike, or public transport, and offer long opening hours—reducing barriers to borrowing and returning items.

Meeting local needs

The selection of items was informed by a library user survey, which provided insight into existing user groups, their needs, and borrowing habits. Residents expressed a clear interest in practical, community-oriented resources and easy access to tools and equipment—needs the new sharing stations have now been designed to meet.

Launch events and pilot period

The stations were launched on Wednesday 25 February with two local events at Aalestrup Library and Aars Library open to all.

Visitors were able to see “Fællesskabet” in person, get an introduction to how the stations worked, and enjoy coffee and cake.

The sharing stations can now be accessed during library opening hours and will run as a pilot test until the end of the year. The municipality will use insights from this pilot—together with learning from the wider Digital Kiosks consortium—to refine the approach and support a future roll-out across Vesthimmerlands.
