Familjebostäder

Social housing provider Familjebostäder will bring its perspective as one of the largest property owners in Gothenburg, Sweden, with roughly 19.000 apartments. Familjebostäder will collaborate with the City of Gothenburg, local tenant organisations, local libraries of toys, and local gardening organisations to test and evaluate three different sharing stations.

Introduction

The pilot by Familjebostäder i Göteborg introduces three sharing stations in Familjebostäder residence buildings in Gothenburg—located in Majorna, Högsbo, and Eriksbo—to expand access to shared everyday items, tools, toys, and sports equipment. The initiative supports residents across diverse neighbourhoods, offering free, convenient borrowing options that encourage social interaction, promote physical activity, and strengthen local engagement.

Location

Three locations have been chosen for the pilot sites:

  • Majorna – Located outside an NGO activity centre, close to a school and a football field. This neighbourhood was chosen due to its active demographic, strong local engagement, and the presence of existing community organisations. Surveys show a clear interest in tool sharing among tenants, making it a suitable site for a multipurpose station.
  • Högsbo – Installed at the local library building and town square, a central, high-traffic area that functions as an established meeting place. The neighbourhood has significant tenant movement and a strong interest in borrowing tools, making it an ideal location for a multipurpose sharing station.
  • Eriksbo – Placed on the neighbourhood square near a park area, in a socially disadvantaged district where access to recreational opportunities can have a strong positive impact. With many children living nearby and new sports fields in the area, residents expressed a clear desire for shared toys and sports equipment, guiding the choice of a sports-focused station.

Sharing station types

All stations are free of charge and include both multipurpose and sports sharing options, with a total of 14-15 items across the three sites. Offering both station types allows for comparison of usage patterns while addressing different neighbourhood needs.

  • The sports station (Eriksbo) includes footballs, basketballs, outdoor games, toys, and other recreational items. Children from the neighbourhood were involved in voting on the items they wanted.
  • The multipurpose stations (Majorna & Högsbo) provide tools and practical household items suitable for DIY, maintenance, or leisure projects, responding to strong local demand identified in tenant surveys.

Objectives

The Familjebostäder pilot aims to provide access to shared goods for 1,000 citizens, ensuring broad and inclusive use across the three neighbourhoods, as well as contribute to the development of proven, scalable sharing solutions that advance Gothenburg’s sustainability and circularity objectives and can be replicated across other sites.
