Recently, the Danish television programme “Jorden kalder (Earth is Calling)” highlighted how Vejle is implementing innovative solutions to adapt to climate change. Instead of a traditional concrete wall, the city has chosen the “Membranes” project, which focuses on nature-based solutions.

This approach not only provides protection against high water but also creates a multifunctional space that serves as a public recreational area most of the time. In this way, the project delivers lasting value for residents and visitors, even when there is no flood risk.

Climate adaptation is an urgent issue for everyone. Combining safety with livability shows how cities can respond to climate challenges while creating attractive spaces for the community.

Within the DISCO project Vejle is exploring innovative ways to communicate with residents about the Membranes project. Engaging citizens is key to ensuring that climate adaptation measures are understood, supported, and integrated into everyday life.
