Challenge
Managing rainwater retention basins in small towns and municipalities, by implementing new digital solutions to maintain effective flood control, while improving rainwater use.
Solution
Development of a digital twin for a rainwater retention basin in Damme (district of Vechta in Lower Saxony). This digital twin will simulate how the basin's water level can be intelligently managed. This allows collecting rainwater, which could be used for irrigation of public areas. While upholding sufficient flood prevention. The project partners can draw on experience from the b:rainTank project, which deals with smart control on a smaller scale, using rain barrels.

As part of the DISCO project, a significant step has been taken towards developing a reliable digital twin of rainwater infrastructure. Jade University has carried out a 3D scan of a rainwater retention basin using the BLK2GO laser scanner. The scan will assist OOWV and the University of Oldenburg in further developing and refining the digital twin.
