About the area
Flood risks in the area
The Belgian province of East-Flanders includes six river basins where fluvial floods can happen. On top of that, pluvial floods are always possible in harsh weather conditions. Recent examples include the floods in multiple cities and municipalities in November 2023 and January 2024, with severe floodings mostly in the Leie- and Denderbasin. East-Flanders is also close to the North Sea, with floodings potentially having indirect consequences more inland.
Contribution of the FIER project to this area
More insight in the preparation for and consequences of floods is a general goal of the FIER project. Given that floods can happen everywhere, we see particular benefit in preparing local communities and emergency services for the dangers of floods. To achieve this, clear, concise and updated guidelines to support the community in general and frequent exercise to optimize procedures are needed.
