The latest REDII Ports partner meeting took place in Belgium, bringing together experts and stakeholders for two days of knowledge exchange and technical exploration.
The event began in Kortrijk with a workshop focused on alternative fuels, organized by the Hydrogen Research Team at VIVES University of Applied Sciences. Discussions centered on the cost and application of hydrogen, methanol, and ammonia in various engine technologies.
Two expert-led sessions sparked engaging conversations about the potential of green methanol and green ammonia as future fuels for the maritime industry. Jeroen Dierickx provided valuable insights into methanol-related cost analysis and market forecasts, while Nathan De Bruyn from CMB.TECH shared the company’s expertise on hydrogen and ammonia technologies.
Following the presentations, Tricky De Muynck from VIVES gave a hands-on demonstration of the team’s work on dual-fuel methanol engines. Participants visited the test platform for sustainable and renewable energy systems, where highlights included a dual-fuel diesel-hydrogen setup and a newly developed gasoil–green methanol dual-fuel system. The day concluded with the official opening of the new hydrogen tank infrastructure on the VIVES campus.
On the second day, the meeting continued in Ostend, where various pilot projects were presented. Representatives from different ports showcased their achievements, shared insights, and discussed solutions for implementing sustainable fuels. These collaborative efforts, supported by the project and its partners, play a vital role in fostering innovation and knowledge exchange across ports and stakeholders.
