Pilot 6: Methanol

The Methanol Pilot project, encompassing Work Packages 2.6 and 2.7, aims to explore renewable methanol production and utilization from local energy sources via carbon capture and utilization or CCU. Two laboratory setups will be created to demonstrate the potential of methanol as a renewable fuel. Firstly, there will be a setup to produce green methanol from CO2 and H2. Secondly, the application of methanol in combustion engines. Finally, a capacity-building workshop will disseminate knowledge about the use of renewable methanol for energy generation in ports.

Currently, the project is in an exploratory phase, conducting market research and engaging potential suppliers for essential components. This phase is vital to lay the groundwork for the project's development and execution:

Market research: The project actively researches available technologies and suppliers in methanol production from local energy surplus and the utilization of methanol in internal combustion engines.

Configuration options: The team explores various setups for demonstration models and test units to identify the most suitable configuration for showcasing CCU technologies and renewable methanol use in internal combustion engines.

Supplier contacts: Concurrently, the project establishes contacts with potential suppliers for essential components, including those for methanol production from CO2 and H2, and for internal combustion engines running on methanol.
