Several topics need to be addressed in order to meet the demand for new services for electrified logistics. This was amplified and investigated during the SELECT workshop Electrified logistics – Demand for new services on May 25 2025. Take part of the reflections from the event here.

The transport sector needs to increase its share of electrified vehicles in order to meet European emmission goals. The transformation will need to accelerate during the upcoming few years and for this to work, the supporting services of this new transportation system will need to be investigated and developed. This was in focus during a SELECT workshop and here are the main reflections from that event.

On a thematical level, a few key topics were pinpointed by the different actors that participated in the workshop and represented different and vital parts of the sector:

  • Collaboration and Sharing
This part is crucial for an efficient transition, with an emphasis on sharing information, risk, and successful practices among stakeholders and cities.
  • Investment and Incentives
Transitioning to electric trucks today, comes with high initial investments and calls for financial incentives and strategic decisions.
  • Infrastructure Development
Within the sector, the actors highlight the importance of developing public and semi-public charging infrastructure, addressing grid capacity issues, and planning ahead.
  • Technological Integration
Integration of smart charging solutions, software, and digitalization with logistics planning systems will be needed for the future transportaion system.
  • Legislation and Policy
Harmonization of transport legislation and increased engagement from government and cities will be needed.
  • Cross-Border Considerations
There is a need for seamless services and a pan-European perspective for cross-border transport to be efficient.

A great example on an actor that is working to lead the shift to electric, but is also having to solve several of the topics above, was Belgian food retailer Colruyt Group who is committed to reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions with 42% by 2030 compared to 2021. Zero emission transport for goods is a vital key to those ambitions.

"We are making our freight transport ever more sustainable. By 2035, all the freight transport carried out by and for Colruyt Group will be zero-emission across the entire value chain. With zero emission transport, we want to reduce our emission of greenhouse gasses in the field of freight transport to zero", said Mathieu Wanderpepen, Colruyt Group.
