Mobitwin: Community transport service for people with reduced mobility

Everyone knows someone who can no longer get around independently due to age or other circumstances. To prevent these vulnerable people from falling into social isolation, Mobitwin connects them with volunteer drivers. Mpact works together with local municipalities, CPAS (OCMW), and NGOs to set up Mobitwin Desks across the country.

The service offers an affordable mobility alternative for people with a low income and limited mobility, with two complementary approaches:

  • Volunteer-driven transport, where volunteers use their own cars to drive people with limited mobility.
  • Peer-to-peer sharing of adapted vehicles, such as tricycles, cargo bikes, and other accessible mobility solutions, for people to lend a vehicle when needed

The service is organised through local Mobitwin Desks, which are responsible for communicating about the service, recruiting volunteers, and supporting day-to-day operations. Mpact, as an umbrella organisation, supports the network of desks and provides tools, guidance, and best practices to help them operate effectively.

During the pilot phase, Mpact focused on improving the operations of two different approaches:

  • Testing new communication strategies to improve the recruitment of new volunteers in the cities of Zwijndrecht and Sint-Niklaas.
  • For the first time, testing the peer-to-peer sharing of adapted vehicles through the Mobitwin platform.
