Visit Varberg invited camping families to swap their car keys for the handlebars of a family cargo bike, and many happily did. Over just a few months, parents and kids used the sturdy bikes for everyday adventures of 3–10 km, from spontaneous beach trips to relaxed rides into town. The results are striking: 30% of survey respondents say they would have taken the car if the cargo bike hadn’t been available, proving that a fun, practical alternative can genuinely shift behaviour. Guests highlighted low cost, friendly service and flexible rental times as the features that made the service irresistible. And perhaps most promising of all: every single participant could imagine using a similar service again. In Varberg, a simple cargo bike has become a symbol of how holiday mobility can be joyful, family-friendly and far more sustainable.
Out of this pilot, the city mentioned it wants to take a facilitation role to support different touristic areas in providing such shared vehicles for many families and other people with reduced mobility to enjoy cycling.
