We have exciting news: shared mobility is thriving in Belgium! Each year, Way To Go (previously Autodelen.net) examines shared mobility trends in Belgium. Initially focused solely on car sharing, the Belgian NGO now also gathers data on shared bikes and scooters. Their research shows among others that there are almost 50,000 shared vehicles in Belgium and that as many as 24 million trips were made by shared bikes and scooters.
Regional Diversity
Flanders, the northern half of Belgium, reaffirms its position as a shared mobility frontrunner. It accounts for 76% of bike-sharing trips and hosts 64% of the 21,721 shared bikes. Car sharing is also gaining popularity in Flanders, evidenced by a 22% growth in active car sharers.
Brussels is at the forefront of shared scooter usage, with 63% of all scooter trips occurring in the capital region. Brussels boasts the highest per capita availability of shared bikes and scooters—6.8 shared bikes and 7.8 shared scooters per 1,000 inhabitants.
If we look at the number of shared cars per region, the Brussels-Capital Region experienced the strongest growth. Between 2020 and 2024, 2,807 shared cars were added, representing an increase of 265%.
Wallonia, Belgium’s southern region, has the least shared mobility usage among the three regions. However, shared mobility supply is increasing there as well.

What’s Next?
Shared mobility has become a crucial part of Belgium’s transport ecosystem. In order to take the next step towards a fully-fledged and reliable mobility option, a framework for recognition and an ambitious roadmap are needed. Local and regional authorities should structurally embed shared mobility in their vision of mobility.
As part of the SHARE-North Squared project, Way To Go sees great potential in structurally integrating shared mobility into residential environments, and in making shared mobility accessible to all. Therefore, they set up initiatives like living labs, where residents of new housing developments explore ways to reduce reliance on private cars.
“Now is the time to invest and fully commit to shared mobility. Let's take the next step together and establish shared mobility as a reliable, fully fledged and sustainable mobility choice.”
- Jeffrey Matthijs, Way To Go Director
Way To Go also offers policy recommendations and practical advice to local governments, shared mobility providers, and planners for successfully incorporating shared mobility into housing projects.
