Our partners in Malmö have developed a method for citizen assemblies with a focus on climate awareness and change. Thankfully, they have put their findings in a handbook for us to read. There are three main points described in the handbook: preparation, process, and barriers. The preparation section details the best conditions to make a climate-focused citizen assembly as smooth as possible: be local, collaborative, cost-effective, and co-creative.
The process section explains how their full process consists of four preparatory educational sessions followed by a weekend for the full citizen assembly. On the first day of the weekend, participants brainstormed ideas, selected the ones they wanted to focus on, and wrote proposals. On the second day, they reviewed the work they’d done and presented the proposals. They were able to be this efficient because of the preparation work they’d done. Finally, the barrier section outlines a few obstacles and answers questions anyone may have about problems that could occur.
