Today, STORM_SAFE took part in an educational working visit in Ostend at the invitation of the Flemish Environment Agency (Vlaamse Milieumaatschappij).

Maarten Goegebeur from the Flemish Environment Agency explained three important parts of water management:

  • Maertenssas: a sluice that regulates the water of the river Noordede and helps prevent flooding. During the 2013 storm, this proved to be a vulnerable spot.
  • Automatic grating: a system that holds back debris and ensures smooth water flow. This reduces the risk of flooding.
  • Camerlinckx complex: A pumping station that drains excess water from the polders. It also plays a role in glass eel fish migration.

Did you know that eel are captured with a eel ladder at the automatic grid on the saline side, so they can be safely released into the fresher polder water?

Thanks to this visit, we saw how smart solutions contribute to a climate-resilient region. Thank you, Flemish Environment Society!
