What is the challenge?
Campsites and accommodation providers observe that, despite their own sustainable efforts, guests often leave significant amounts of waste behind. This contradicts both the entrepreneurs’ ambitions and the sustainable standards many apply at home.
Why this pilot?
The pilot explores why guest behaviour regarding waste differs during holidays and which tools can help bridge the gap between intention and action. Understanding behavioural motivation is essential to designing effective communication and reducing tourism-related waste.
What is being done?
Following a ToC workshop and targeted sessions with SMEs, the core behavioural question was defined. Activities include:
- A co-creation session with campsite ‘It Dreamlân’, NHL Stenden University, VCF and Ynbusiness
- Development of behavioural interventions by students
- Selection and implementation of interventions for the 2026 tourism season
- A survey to evaluate which measures are most effective
Who is involved and what is the 3ST approach?
The pilot is developed through the ToC methodology by Ynbusiness, VCF, the Province of Fryslân, NHL Stenden University and campsite It Dreamlân.
What will it deliver?
- Insight into the gap between motivation and behaviour
- Practical communication tools and lessons learned
- Strengthened collaboration between education institutions and SMEs
