In this series, we spotlight the creative minds shaping BBoBB. Who are they, what drives them, and how are they advancing biodesign with bio-based materials?

This edition features Jan Loosveldt, a freelance product engineer based in Heestert.

Who are you?

Hi, I’m Jan Loosveldt, a freelance product engineer based in Heestert  close to Kortrijk in Belgium. I focus on the engineering of in and outdoor furniture and every object that has to be nice-looking and functional.

What is your role in the BBoBB project?

In the BBoBB project, I’m working with flax. I’m currently exploring the production of linoleum. Linoleum is not that popular at the moment despite its great added value as a biobased material. I want to create new applications for it. I’m working together with the BBoBB Designregio Kortrijk team where we have our own biolab.

What have you done so far in the project?

So far, I have mainly searched for materials that are 100% biobased. I am particularly struck by how difficult it is to buy semi-finished products such as biobased chipboard materials. I also followed monthly the inspiring sessions organized by Designregio Kortrijk.

How do you experience working with the card-based method developed by Bert Vuylsteke? Has it helped shape your ideas or way of thinking?

The card method helped me to challenge my assumptions. I especially like the practical examples like the company Full Grown. The idea of growing a tree in the shape of a chair is simply fantastic. The biodesign toolkit helps me to change my way of engineering products.

Your vision on working with biobased materials

For me, biobased design is about coming closer to nature. I believe that we need that connection as human. By working with local materials, designing biobased products and building houses with materials from natural origin we can make that connection better.

Any final thoughts or hopes for the BBoBB project?

It still amazes me every day that people, companies and governments remain unaware of the polluting materials they continue to use for insulation and product development.

I can't get over the fact that products are still being made that simply have to be dumped in a landfill at the end of their life, when so many bio-based alternatives already exist.

However, I am hopeful when I see the many initiatives within the circular economy. No matter how small they may start, I believe they will lead to a turnaround, and I am happy to play my part.

Thank you, Jan, for sharing your inspiring journey and vision for a more sustainable future. As you said, "No matter how small they may start, I believe they will lead to a turnaround" — and we’re proud that you’re playing your part in that shift through your work in the BBoBB project.
