Stadt Göttingen

Waageplatz is a central square in Göttingen that connects the city center with the Masch-Straßen district. It lies right next to the Leine Canal, close to the city’s green wall and the public prosecutor’s office. Many people cross the square every day, and it is also used for public events. However, the space currently has little shade and becomes very hot in summer. It is also prone to flooding during heavy rainfall. This pilot project will transform Waageplatz into a cooler, greener space that can be used for recreation, public events, and relaxation. The redesign will be completed by the end of 2027 and is supported by the national “Social Cohesion” urban development program.

About the pilot

This project uses nature-based solutions and a design that follows how people move through the square. Several green “islands” will be added, shaped by pedestrian flow. These islands will be used for sitting, relaxing, and playing and will also help drain rainwater. Shade will come from climate-resistant trees and pergolas. A water play area for children will bring activity and fun, and the nearby Leine Canal will be made more accessible. Waageplatz will become a cool, welcoming spot in the city, and may even be connected to a future city-wide cooling network.

What makes this approach unique?

What stands out in this project is the combination of smart design and community involvement. The new layout is based on how people already move through and use the space, making it feel natural and useful from day one. Residents and users are involved in shaping the square, helping to create a place that reflects their real needs and wishes. This is not just about building something new it’s about creating a public space that belongs to everyone and is made with everyone.

Expected results

By the end of 2027, Waageplatz will be a cooler and more inviting space for everyone. The new design will make the square more resistant to heat and heavy rain, while offering more green space, play opportunities, and comfortable places to sit and gather. Children and older people in the neighborhood will especially benefit from the improvements. In the long term, we hope Waageplatz will become a popular place for daily use, events, and relaxation. A real example of how cities can create better public spaces through smart planning and close cooperation with the community.
