The Belgian Marine Environment Department (FPS Public Health) has in collaboration with DG Shipping (FPS Mobility) launched an awareness campaign on underwater noise.

The aim of the campaign is to inform the general public about the issue of underwater noise in the Belgian North Sea and to draw attention to the effects of underwater noise not only on marine mammals but also on fish and invertebrates.

This campaign is also meant for the relevant stakeholders to draw attention to the IMO Guidelines for the reduction of underwater radiated noise from shipping to address adverse impacts on marine life. It supports activity 3.6 ‘Training and awareness’ under action 3 ‘Commercial Shipping’ of the Regional Action Plan for Underwater Noise."

A new web page (www.underwaternoise.be ) has been developed together with a number of educational and informative materials, as well as three short, playful teasers to attract attention.
