Esbjerg Airport has been piloting a two-wheeled jumping inspection robot within the framework of the DIOL project as part of the DIOL project´s pilot on Smart Surveillance of Logistics Hubs and Renewable Energy Infrastructure. The robot´s official name is Ascento Guard, but internally, the staff is looking for a new way to call it. Wall-E, Robocop and R2-D2 are among the proposals, as it looks like a mix of a spaceship and a Henry vacuum cleaner.

Security is the motivation for the test. The airport is surrounded by a ca eight kilometer fence, which is currently inspected manually several times a day to ensure that nobody can break into. The robot has various advantages: it can detect even small holes in the fence, send an alarm directly to the control team, activate two-way communication in the event of intruders and react to suspicious objects, e.g. a ladder or any other object standing against the fence. Furthermore, the software is programmed to learn continuously, and the more the robot is used, the better it becomes.
