NS communities need innovation to tackle upcoming challenges. Current innovation policy emphasizes sustainable and inclusive transitions, often focusing on R&D and high-tech clusters. However, addressing Grand Societal Challenges (GSCs) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) requires simpler, bottom-up governance models. FREIIA aims to equip local governments with the skills and resources needed for effective transformative policies, focusing on GSCs/SDGs. They're developing a practical governance framework called the Governance Innovation Intervention Learning Model to facilitate easy application and rapid diffusion. NS islands, known for their unique innovation potential, serve as inspiration for this model's development.
