FREIIA Meet & Greet - Schiermonnikoog
On 25 August, the Meet & Greet took a place at Strandpaviljoen Paal 3 on Schiermonnikoog. The evening combined inspiring stories, open conversations, and creative reflection on the challenges of plastic pollution and the importance of cooperation on the islands.
The evening was opened by Alderman Ilja Zonneveld, who explained the goals of FREIIA and the importance of sustainable cooperation on the islands. Afterwards, Surya van Loon took the group outside into the golden evening sun, sharing a personal and confronting story about plastic waste in the sea. Her experience sparked recognition and conversation among the audience, who also shared their own “jut finds”.
Back inside, by the warmth of the woodstove, Mark Verdonschot gave an emotional account of his worries about plastic pollution – but also his hope: “Every conversation is a seed that can grow into change.”
The evening ended with a creative mini-workshop by Surya, sweet treats, and a magical sunset, leaving visitors inspired and connected.
Looking ahead
On 22 September, the next Meet & Friet will take place, when a new group of students will meet the islanders, listen to their needs, and start developing new ideas.
At the end of the year, FREIIA plans to conclude with a mini-symposium during the Christmas Market, where students will present their final results together with the island community.
