Within the FREIIA project, Greenmapper was used as a key tool to support island communities through public participation and mapping of nature-related places. Watch the video below to hear Yuyao Mei's  explanation of what Greenmapper is.

As the FREIIA project nears completion, we look back with pride at what we’ve accomplished and we reflect on how it has led not only to theoretical insights but also to practical implementation and direct impact on island communities.

One of FREIIA’s key tools is Greenmapper: an online platform combining scientific research with community participation. It allows users to map and share nature-related places they value, helping build a virtual community that supports innovation on islands.

Islands often face challenges due to small populations and limited social capital. Greenmapper addresses this by using public participatory geographic information systems (PPGIS) to involve both residents and visitors in shaping sustainable futures.

To ensure the legacy of FREIIA lives on, we recently hosted a meeting between researcher Yuyoa Mei and project manager AlbertRuiter to reflect on Greenmapper’s results and future potential. During this visit, Yuyoa answered a key question for nature lovers:
"What is Greenmapper?"

Watch the video below on our LinkedIn page to hear Yuyao’s explanation of what Greenmapper is.
