Climate adaptation is not a side issue. It’s a shared task. And that’s exactly what came to life during the ‘Next Level Challenges: Green Team Benefits’ role-playing game.
In a dynamic session led by Jürgen Schultze from TU Dortmund University, the Green Team method became tangible. Participants stepped into the roles of municipal staff from water management, urban planning and climate adaptation, and discussed how climate adaptation could be achieved. One thing became clear very quickly: the time for individual solutions is over.
Right from the start, the climate adaptation manager set the tone: “We need joint solutions. It’s time we join forces.” But not everyone was immediately on board. The experienced spatial planner raised concerns: “All that coordination takes time. Let’s improve things internally first.” A common objection – yet it sparked a productive discussion.
Step by step, hesitation gave way to energy. Realistic arguments, shared goals and diverse perspectives moved the group forward. The water management expert brought concrete proposals, the young planner pushed for measurable results, and the climate adaptation manager emphasised the importance of public support. In the end, the message was clear: sustainable solutions are only possible through cooperation, transparency, and clear strategies. Green Teams creates added value – professionally, personally, and strategically.
What stood out most was the view from the outside. The audience following the exchange highlighted the importance of balance: motivation, yes – but also structure. Energy, but not chaos. One quote resonated with many: “A car without brakes will crash” Because this is key: climate adaptation cannot stay confined to one department. It needs to become part of everyday work across the entire municipality.
The session showed that Green Teams create space for real dialogue, make complex issues tangible, and lead to long-term solutions.
