Welcome to H2ignite – the Future of Green Hydrogen in the North Sea Region

Step into the forefront of the green hydrogen revolution. H2ignite is where innovation, cross-border collaboration, and climate ambition converge to reshape transport and energy systems across the North Sea Region.

Our mission? To accelerate emerging hydrogen initiatives in regional ecosystems, connecting industry, policy, and research to fast-track sustainable transport solutions. Over the next three years (September 2024 – August 2027), we’ll be driving innovation on the ground through pilot projects, testing new business models, and unlocking the policy frameworks needed to scale hydrogen solutions.

Explore our platform to:

  • Discover our regional pilots and the technologies being tested on roads, at sea, and beyond
  • Stay informed with the latest insights, reports, and innovations from the project through our newsletter below
  • Connect with our network of experts at upcoming hydrogen events or conferences.

This is more than a project. It’s a catalyst for change.

Follow us—and be part of the transition to zero-emission transport in Europe.

Why Hydrogen

The North Sea Region (NSR) is at the forefront of green energy transformation, offering enormous opportunities for energy security, economic growth, and hydrogen innovation capacity. The global green hydrogen market is projected to reach €591bn by 2030 (Deloitte, 2023), and hydrogen has a particularly crucial role to play in decarbonizing the transport sector.

However, three major challenges persist:

Small H2 Ecosystems: Most hydrogen ecosystems consist of small, isolated private sector groups that are in early test phases, with little public sector coordination or knowledge exchange.

Scarcity of Business Models: There is a lack of innovative and viable business models for both single and multi-user hydrogen applications.

Lack of Public Policies and Transnational Strategies: Without enabling public policies and cohesive cross-border deployment strategies, private actors face significant risks when attempting to scale hydrogen solutions.

H2ignite seeks to address these challenges by:

Establishing four cross-sector regional hydrogen innovation ecosystems.

Developing and testing innovative business models for green hydrogen transport value chains (HDVs, vessels).

Fostering cross-sector dialogue to close the gap between legislators and enterprises.

Promoting hydrogen policy innovations such as procurement frameworks and incentive schemes to accelerate deployment.

Together, these actions will ensure that the North Sea Region harnesses the full potential of hydrogen to drive a green, sustainable, and resilient transport system.
