Last week, the Flagship City of Hamburg hosted a "Regional dialogue forum on data-based bicycle infrastructure planning" to share the results of the MegaBITS Project.

Participants from districts, the metropolitan region, and partner cities gathered in Hamburg to discuss key challenges and opportunities in urban cycling data.

The exchange centred around how data modelling and standardisation can be meaningfully integrated into municipal workflows, how to deal with fragmented and heterogeneous data sources, and which reference models or schemas can serve as a common foundation across municipalities.

Besides presenting the MegaBITS Project results and the FBD Playbook, the exchange expanded into broader topics like shared data platforms, bike sharing, interoperable exchange formats, and the different challenges arising when planning at a city level vs. across federal states.

One important aspect of the discussion was that surrounding municipalities were able to benefit directly from the experiences gained in Hamburg. It also became clear that achieving a high level of data coverage and data quality is crucial. At the same time, clearly defined use cases are essential to ensure that collected data is not only available, but actually usable and impactful for planning and decision-making.

Thank you to everyone who contributed their perspectives, challenges, and ideas. The exchange showed once again how valuable regional dialogue is for scaling innovation beyond individual municipalities.
