The MegaBITS project recently held two key sessions to evaluate pilot implementations and share lessons learnt: a Steering Group meeting in Gothenburg and the final Advisory Group meeting online.
Steering Group evaluation meeting in Gothenburg
The SG convened at Chalmers University of Technology where the group was able to get to know Chalmers’ history and its connection to Gothenburg’s cycling culture.
After the project management updates, all flagships presented brief evaluations of their pilot implementations, focusing on the observed effects of the interventions and the key lessons learned.
A knowledge sharing session allowed participants to exchange on mutual learning, the potential transferability of approaches, effective practices, and aspects that may benefit from a different strategy in future implementations.
The pilots highlighted that technology alone does not guarantee increased cycling. Outcomes from the evaluation include noting how digital twins, VMS signs, and participation platforms enhanced awareness and engagement. On the other hand, FBD tools, apps, and data dashboards emphasised the need for high-quality, representative data, careful calibration, and regional collaboration. AI solutions, tailored data collection, and combining multiple sources were key recommendations for effective planning and decision-making.
Overall, the Gothenburg SG meeting provided a comprehensive review of pilot implementations, highlighting successes, limitations, and future opportunities.
Advisory Group Online Session
The final AG meeting, hosted by the Project Lead, the Province of Overijssel, complemented the SG discussions by reflecting on broader lessons from the MegaBITS project.
Chalmers University was able to present lessons learnt and organise a collaborative session about recommendations. Debates focused on optimal scales for data collection, balancing broad versus targeted approaches, and improving feeder connections to bicycle highways.
Attendees were also informed about the last organisational development of the International conference on smart cycling, MegaBITS’ final event.
The results of both meetings will feed into MegaBITS’ recommendations report, consolidating lessons learnt and guiding future cycling infrastructure, mobility apps, and data ecosystems.
