As part of the NESSIE Short Advanced Course (SAC) portfolio, Samsø Energy Academy recently welcomed a group of international students for the one-day course “Sustainable Development in the 21st Century.”

Designed as an intensive introduction to sustainability thinking, the course offered participants structured insight into the frameworks, leadership perspectives, and practical tools needed to engage meaningfully with today’s green transition challenges

A Structured Approach to Sustainability

The course introduces students to key perspectives, tools, and frameworks for understanding and engaging with sustainable development. Through a focused mix of theory, dialogue, reflection, and systems thinking, participants explore how sustainability connects to:

  • Leadership and personal responsibility
  • Design and strategic action
  • Economic and financial considerations in the green transition

Rather than presenting sustainability as a purely technical topic, the course positions it as a leadership and systems challenge — one that requires clarity of role, perspective, and action.

Clear Learning Goals Through Intentional SAC Design

The learning objectives for the day are practical and reflective. Participants get to:

  • Reflect on their personal roles and leadership perspectives within sustainability transitions
  • Use basic systems-thinking tools to explore sustainability challenges in projects and practice
  • Gain introductory insight into economic, cultural, and strategic dimensions of change
  • Become familiar with practical tools for reflecting on impact and navigating uncertainty

For international students visiting Samsø, this creates a strong bridge between local case experience and transferable sustainability competencies.

Step 1: Framing the Challenge
Participants build a shared understanding of sustainability challenges and why they matter.

Step 2: Positioning Ourselves
The focus shifts from “the world out there” to “my role in it.”

Step 3: From Insight to Action
Insights are translated into practical application.

Linking Local Practice and International Learning

Samsø Energy Academy plays a central role within NESSIE in bridging community-based energy transition practice with structured learning. By hosting international students, the Academy demonstrates how regional experience can inform broader European workforce development.

The one-day Sustainable Development course exemplifies the NESSIE approach: modular, reflective, and grounded in real-world transition dynamics. It equips participants not only with knowledge, but with perspective — an essential ingredient for building the next generation of energy transition professionals.
