Headquartered in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada, Ballard brings decades of experience in developing proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells for heavy-duty applications across the marine, truck, rail, and stationary power sectors.

At the heart of Ballard’s maritime innovation is the Marine Center of Excellence in Hobro, Denmark. This facility is dedicated to the engineering, manufacturing, and servicing of heavy-duty fuel cell modules specifically for the marine industry. With an annual production capacity exceeding 40 MW, it plays a crucial role in scaling up clean propulsion technologies for vessels of all sizes.

A flagship product from this center is the FCwave™, a modular 200kW fuel cell system designed to provide scalable, zero-emission power for maritime use. FCwave™ has received type approvals from major classification societies, including DNV and Lloyd’s Register, reinforcing its readiness for real-world marine applications.

Ballard’s expertise was demonstrated with the launch of the MF Hydra, the world’s first liquid hydrogen-powered ferry. Now in operation, the 80-car ferry uses two 200kW FCwave™ modules supplied and integrated by Ballard—marking a key milestone in the transition to cleaner marine transport.

Within the consortium, Ballard contributes its deep knowledge of marine fuel cell design, integration, and system installation. The company also works with project ports to co-develop bunkering and fueling infrastructure and supports broader use cases such as shore power and port logistics applications.
