From June 9 to 13, 2025, global ocean advocates gathered in Nice, France, for the Third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC 3) – a high-level meeting bringing together UN member states, scientists, NGOs, and civil society to advance action on Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water.

In the context of marine protection, one issue that cannot be overlooked is the pollution threat posed by submerged munitions and shipwrecks from past wars. These legacy hazards continue to leak toxic substances into the marine environment, endangering ecosystems, fisheries, and coastal communities.

To raise awareness and foster collaboration, GEOMAR and HELCOM, in cooperation with the Alfred Wegener Institute, hosted the side event "No Time to Waste: Tackling Submerged Munitions in European Seas" aboard the RV Meteor, moored in the Port of Nice.

Representatives from various European munitions research projects, including a scientist from the REMARCO project, provided insight into the scale of the problem, current scientific efforts, and the urgent need for coordinated action at both national and international levels.

The evening concluded successfully with thought-provoking discussions, new connections, and a beautiful sunset backdrop over the harbor of Nice.
