From June 18 to 20, 2025, the second Kiel Munition Clearance Week took place in Kiel, Germany. This international event brings together stakeholders from government, industry, defense, and research to discuss the challenges and approaches related to the removal of historic munitions from the seafloor.
Representatives from the REMARCO project joined the event to contribute the scientific perspective on the issue of underwater munitions and their environmental impact. Through presentations and direct engagement at an information booth, the team aimed to raise awareness of the long-term ecological risks posed by these legacy contaminants in the marine environment.
While the event mainly highlighted technical and strategic clearance solutions, REMARCO's participation underlined the importance of a comprehensive approach – one that integrates scientific findings and environmental considerations alongside economic and security aspects.
By contributing knowledge and dialogue, REMARCO hopes to help ensure that future clearance decisions are made not only effectively, but also responsibly, with the health of marine ecosystems in mind.
