REMARCO joint "Blast in Place Operation" (BIP) by Danish Navy divers at Bornholm island

On the 21st of November, 2023, a series of four mines dating back to the last century were safely detonated through BIP Operations. This method involves the precise attachment of additional explosive charges to undetonated ordnance to facilitate controlled detonations, thereby mitigating the risks associated with unplanned explosions. Collaborating with the Aarhus University and the Danish Navy, sediment and water samples were taken by AWI scientist both in advance and after the BIP operation to be analysed for traces of explosives by the partners from UKSH in Kiel. In addition, mussels were placed in cages in the remaining craters of the BIP operations at the mines and will be assessed later for the uptake of dissolved explosives deriving from the BIP operation and potential biological effects connected with the uptake of these munition compounds.
