The SHARE-North Squared project is one of the winners of Interreg's North Sea Video contest! Our video that advocates ‘more park, less parking’ has charmed the jury, making us the winner in Category 1, ‘Put your project in the spotlight’.

The video

For the fifth time, the Interreg North Sea Programme organised the North Sea Video Contest. The goal of this competition is to create short videos that can inspire others in and beyond the Interreg community. The SHARE-North Squared team did not need much convincing: we love communicating about our project and are even more fond of some competition!

SHARE-North Squared participated in ‘Category 1 – Put your project in the spotlight’ for non-technical introductions about the Interreg projects. We submitted an animation titled “More Park, Less Parking”. The short video is the animated version of our SN² flipbook. It showcases how innovative parking bylaws for real estate developments can positively influence more sustainable use of space, focussing on what you can do with 12m², the average space taken up by a parked car.

Cornelia Cordes, who leads the project on behalf of the Hanseatic City of Bremen, tells us more about the video:

“We were looking for a fun and comprehensive way to communicate what drives us as a consortium: to increase spatial efficiency in our cities. Privately owned vehicles stand still most of the time. Shared vehicles, by contrast, are used more efficiently. Research for Bremen shows that a shared car replaces up to 16 privately owned vehicles. This frees up a lot of space that can be devoted to other uses: ‘more park, and less parking’.”

During the Interreg North Sea Conference in Oldenburg, Germany, our flipbook animation was announced as the winner in the category 'Put your project in the spotlight'!

The project

The SHARE-North Squared project realises 'More Park, Less Parking' by integrating shared mobility solutions in (social) housing projects. This has multiple advantages:

  1. It becomes easier for local residents to get rid of their privately owned vehicle as shared modes become available directly at one's doorstep,

  2. It lowers construction costs for housing developers as fewer (underground) parking spaces need to be build,

  3. It opens new markets for shared mobility providers as they can directly target (future) residents of large real estate projects.

“One of the strengths of our project”, Cornelia Cordes says, “is that our member cities develop innovative policies that can be inspiring for other local governments and help project developers to successfully integrate shared mobility, and to promote its use to end users. We do concrete interventions in the field and share the learnings between the public and private partners involved in the project.”

By winning the video contest, the Interreg North Sea Programme has given us a tremendous opportunity to communicate our message beyond the mobility ecosystem:

“By announcing us as winners and showing our video during the North Sea Conference, we were able to illustrate to the entire Interreg North Sea Community what we are aiming for with the SN² project. We are enormously grateful for this opportunity!”

The other winners

The Interreg North Sea Contest consists of three categories: 'Put your project in the spotlight', in which SN² emerged as the winner, 'Our impact’, showcasing the change that a project has brought, and ‘Go wild’, an open category to showcase how a project engages with citizens, helps to combat climate change, supports the development of rural areas, etc.

The SHARE-North Squared project wishes to congratulate the winners in the two other categories, namely:

- Biodiverse Cities, which puts nature at the heart of urban life. Through pilot actions, nature-based solutions, and policy change, this project supports cities in becoming places where both people and pollinators thrive.

- CLANCY, which tackles the spread of invasive aquatic species that threaten biodiversity and damage flood infrastructure. Through innovative monitoring and mitigation, the project protects rivers and strengthens ecosystem resilience.

Together with Biodiverse Cities and CLANCY, SHARE-North Squared is very proud to be an ambassador of the Interreg North Sea Programme and to contribute, each in our domains, to a more sustainable, resilient, and cooperative Europe.
