Inland Shipping Experts Discuss Policy Recommendations for Greening the Sector as Part of the SPIES Project
On April 29, 2025, a group of inland shipping experts gathered to review the draft policy recommendation plan of the SPIES project, as well as the results of the recent online survey conducted by SPIES. The meeting, organized by De Vlaamse Waterweg and the Limburg Provincial Development Agency (POM Limburg), provided valuable insights that will be incorporated into the final version of the policy plan.
The experts unanimously agreed: the greening of inland shipping is not optional—it is essential. Shore power was identified as a crucial element in this transition. At the same time, the need for a more proactive role from the European Union was emphasized—not only in terms of communication, but also in the alignment, standardization, and harmonization of the shore power network. The experts also stressed the importance of embracing complementary technologies and innovations.
A compelling example was presented by representatives of 2cover, who showcased their onboard battery system, Powerstash. This solution provides a strong complement to the roll-out of shore power infrastructure in inland ports, enabling vessels to store and use sustainable energy onboard efficiently. It represents a valuable contribution to a more flexible and resilient energy system for inland navigation.
The meeting marked an important step in shaping the final SPIES policy recommendation plan. Thanks to the shared expertise and practical insights, the plan will be both content-rich and broadly supported across the sector.
