Quickscan – Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the Quickscan tool for?
The Waterwarmth Quickscan quickly shows whether aquathermy could be an interesting option for your building or project. The focus is on buildings and surface waters.

2. Can anyone use the scan?
Yes, anyone can get started!
Do you find some questions difficult to understand? Please let us know through the feedback form so we can improve the next version.

3. What prior knowledge is needed to complete the scan?
You’ll need an idea of your project (heating demand or square meters per function), some characteristics of the water body (the tool also tells you where to find certain data), and the layout of your location; for example, do you need to dig under a road to connect your building to the water body?

4. How many questions are there in the scan?
4 categories, with 4–9 questions per category (including explanations).

5. Where can I leave my comments?
In the feedback form 😊

6. How long does it take to complete?
If you have all the information ready: 15–20 minutes.
If you still need to look up a lot, it will naturally take longer.

7. How reliable are the results?
It’s really just a quick scan: a rough estimate of demand, supply, and possible points of attention or obstacles. If you make changes based on feedback, you can also update your answers.

8. What can I do with the results?
At the end of the scan, you’ll have an idea of whether aquathermy is a potential option for your building or project. For setting up a business case, we strongly recommend carrying out a (pre-)feasibility study.

9. Where can I find the tool?
Download the Quickscan tool

10. Is there any guidance or help for filling it in?
The tool is designed so you can start right away. The questions include explanations (tip: hover your mouse over the cell) and provide feedback based on your answers.
On October 30, 2025, we will also host a webinar, and later this year more materials will be made available to make using the tool even easier.

11. Can the tool also be used in areas without much surface water?
The focus is on surface water (still, flowing, and sea), but the Quickscan can also be applied to small projects. The business case (and payback time) will likely be less favorable for very small projects, but it’s certainly not impossible.

12. Does the tool take ecological effects and regulations (e.g. water management, permits) into account?
In general terms. For specific regulations, it’s important to contact the relevant authority. Often, this information is also available online.

13. Is the tool suitable for both new and existing buildings?
Absolutely! For older buildings, it’s important to ensure insulation is improved (if it hasn’t been already). Otherwise, the heat pump will operate very inefficiently. The tool will also point this out to you.

14. What happens to my data?
The tool is an Excel file. As long as it stays on your laptop, nothing happens to your data 😊
If you discover a bug and want to share the file with us, we guarantee your data will not be distributed further. You can help us! Fill in the feedback form and let us know how to improve the tool. Download the form (under construction)
