POP-Up Talk 'Composting and heat generation by using Biomeilers'
Evert Vanecht of the Highschool Of Applied Sciences in Belgium, will give an intereresting introduction and insight of the projects Biomeiler and Biotainer. In these projects, the system of the biomeiler is investigated in the context of local processing of woody waste streams. With a biomeiler, the woody material, possibly together with another waste stream such as manure, is slowly composted. Slowly means for a period longer than 1 year. In addition to the production of compost, the biomeiler also generates heat that can be used again and on local scale.
With this project, the quality of biomeiler compost is analyzed, compared to commercially available compost. A topic that has not been properly studied till now and as a result of which the sales and use applications of biomeiler compost are rather limited. At this moment four test biomeilers are set up and the compost production is monitored. An extensive comparison is made, based on current quality parameters, between the biomeiler compost and commercially available compost. Also the use of the heat coming from the process is investigated with the test biomeilers.
Second part of the POP-Up Talk is about the TEAPOTS project. Dries Verberckmoes explaines the project which aims to give agri-food players an innovative integrated, modular, and flexible solution to meet local and seasonal energy demand through the valorisation of lignocellulosic and difficult to be treated agricultural waste while producing biochar.
