The European Commission’s newly published Bioeconomy Strategy (November 2025) sets an ambitious vision: By 2040, sustainable bio-based materials and products — from construction materials and biochemicals to textiles, fertilisers, plant-protection products and plastics — will be widely deployed across the EU. Offering fossil-free alternatives and creating stable income opportunities in rural, coastal and industrial regions.

Contribution CLOSECYCLE

Within this evolving landscape, the CLOSECYCLE project is contributing practical solutions and tangible examples that make the future bioeconomy easier to understand — and easier to realise.

Building on earlier work from TUHH and INRAE in the FLEXIBI project, a clear and accessible flyer presents the key principles of a modern bioeconomy. It explains how residue-based products can be transformed into value across four categories:
Speciality products, Mass products, Replacement products and Energy products.

CLOSECYCLE partners are turning these concepts into reality, developing prototypes and market-ready examples in each category. These include natural antioxidants, compost and peat-substitute products, biogas-derived materials and several other innovations that demonstrate the practical potential of bio-based solutions.

Strategy for Territorial Biorefinery Networks

A major focus of the project is the development of a Strategy for Territorial Biorefinery Networks — regional systems that connect biomass resources, processing technologies and markets. These networks are considered a cornerstone of a sustainable European bioeconomy, enabling circular value chains, reducing fossil dependencies and strengthening local economies.

As Europe moves toward its 2040 bioeconomy vision, CLOSECYCLE is helping to show what the transition looks like on the ground: innovative, circular and beneficial for communities across the continent.
