The experimental project involving the collection of food waste using cargo bikes in the designated test areas in Lübeck reached its conclusion on the 02.01.2026. With the final collection activity being conducted on this date. Beginning of January 2026, the racks were removed from each waste collection point. The citizens were permitted to retain their presorter or return it on the final day.

First sorting of waste

The final sorting analyses were conducted between October 2025 and January 2026. In the previous sorting process, the presence of several waste fractions was not detected. These missing fractions were analyzed on  the 12th of January. Subsequent analysis of specific fractions was conducted with a view to determining their organic and water contents. The efficiency of the presorter was analysed in greater detail. For instance, the weight of the emptied presorter was measured, as food waste sometimes remained attached to it. Discussions were held on measures to prevent this. One proposed solution involved the utilisation of a robust paper to fill the presorter ground.

Questionnaire for evaluation

A questionnaire was devised to solicit the opinions of the citizenry on the experiment. The questionnaire posed questions regarding the impact of the experiment, specifically whether it had enhanced waste collection and raised general awareness of proper waste sorting. The subsequent phases will entail the evaluation of all the data pertaining to the waste sorting analyses, the determination of waste amounts, the assessment of water and organic content, and the analysis of the questionnaire.
